Custom Bite Splints and Correcting Your Bite

TMJ Pain/Dysfunction

TMJ Pain, Dysfunction
and The QuickSplint

Did you know that over 30% of adults in this country suffer from chronic facial pain. In our practice (during the COVID era) we’ve seen over 150 TMJ pain sufferers —some driving distance from points north and south. We’ve helped them all with a simple appliance called a QuickSplint. Customized to your bite, you’ll feel relief as it calms the muscles in spasm by taking you off your back teeth (often within minutes of wearing it). You see, what you think is joint pain is actually muscle spasms. Stress-related clenching and grinding taxes your system—when your bite is off just a tad (most are) grinding will make things ten times worse—think running with a pebble in your sneaker. Once we get you stable and comfortable, we’ll recommend a customized bite splint—a beautifully designed custom appliance that you’ll wear when sleeping.

Common signs and symptoms include:

  • Any kind of headache (migraine, cluster, stress)
  • Clicking or popping of the TMJ (jaw joint)
  • Pain or locking of the TMJ
  • Facial pain
  • Jaw pain
  • Ear pain
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Stuffiness in the ears
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Limited mouth openingproper bite I
  • Uncomfortable bite
  • Teeth shifting position
  • Excessively worn teeth
  • Gum recession
  • Clenching/grinding of the teeth
  • Cold or hot sensitivity of the teeth
  • Neck pain
  • Dizziness
  • Deep pain behind the eyes
There are many causes for your TMJ dysfunction. The most common are a troubled occlusion caused by grinding while sleeping, daytime clenching and/or poorly designed dental treatment that’s thrown off your correct bite alignment. Dr. Bloom (a specialist in this area) has decades of advanced training and great success treating TMJ issues without medications, or invasive treatment. He believes in bite splint therapy where you wear a custom designed mouth appliance when you sleep. The therapy is twofold, the bite splint allows the TMJs and muscles to settle so your pain lessens, and it is also diagnostic. If you get relief from the guard then your issue is the alignment of your bite and you don’t need surgery. Once he’s made your custom bite splint he’ll adjust /customize it to your bite so that you are 100% comfortable to wear. For most patients once they sleep with it won’t ever give it up– they sleep sounder and wake more rested. We have countless testimonials about our patient’s love affair with their bite splint. Just keep it our of harm’s way, our puppy almost made mine a chew toy.

For over 25 years, Dr. Bloom has successfully treated headache pain and related discomfort in the TMJ’s, facial muscles and tooth pain through occlusal therapy.
